William “Bill” Frederick Cuppernell, 87, of Chaumont, NY passed away Thursday night, April 3, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
Bill was born in Watertown, NY on May 28, 1937 to the late Walter E. and Margaret (Croyle) Cuppernell. He married his high school sweetheart Emelie (Merchant) Cuppernell on June 1, 1958 at the Chaumont Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Broad officiating. Together Bill and Emelie had 3 children, Philip, Margret, and Patricia.
Bill had many careers throughout his life. He served in the Naval Reserves for 8 years, was a school bus driver for over 30 years at both Wayne Central and Lyme Central Schools. Bill also owned and operated an aluminum and brass foundry and a sawmill, all at the same time. He was also a master mason with Masonic Lodge 172 in Chaumont and a patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Bill loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing, cooking, or playing penny poker on Wednesday afternoons with his friends. He also did some woodworking projects, one of which was a bed he made for his grandchild that is still being used today by his great grand-dogs. His wife, Emelie, was grateful for his woodworking skills as he built several sewing cabinets for her over the years. Bill was known for his great cooking as well, he made gravy for the church chicken and biscuit dinner for 15 years and the best pancakes his grandkids have ever had.
William is survived by his wife of 67 years, Emelie Cuppernell, their daughters, Margret (Rick) Quinn and Patricia (Lynn) Maloney, 6 Grandchildren, Philip, Emelie, Brandy, Billy, Jessica, and Nicole, 13 Great Grandchildren, first wife of the late Philip Cuppernell, Melanie Cuppernell, and widow of Philip Cuppernell, Patricia.
William is predeceased by his brothers, Walter “Nick”, Robert, and Martin Cuppernell, and his son, Philip Cuppernell.
A funeral service will be held at the Three Mile Bay Methodist Church on June 8th at 1:00PM, with a burial at Riverside Cemetery immediately following.
