Robert “Bob” Sturtz, 92, of Watertown, NY, passed away February 10, 2026. Bob was born April 30, 1933 in Croghan NY, the son of Roy and Edna (Rohr) Sturtz of Namburg, NY. He graduated from the Watertown School of Commerce with a degree in accounting.
Bob married Jean Audrey Stewart in 1953. Together they had 5 children. Bob and Jean enjoyed traveling. Bob was a great believer in giving back to the community.
Upon completion of a 30 year career as Sales Manager of M. E. Avery Co., he purchased Slack Chemical Company of Carthage NY in 1986 where he was President until his death. He firmly believed his employees were his most valuable business asset. This philosophy enabled him to grow Slack Chemical into one of the top chemical distributors in the northeast. He served the local community on the following boards: Samaritan Foundation of Northern NY, American Red Cross of NNY, United Way of NNY, Carthage Area Hospital Foundation, WPBS Television (St. Lawrence Valley ETV Council), Hospice Foundation and Board, Economic Development Corporation of Carthage, DANC, and Jefferson Community College Foundation.
In 2008 Bob was recognized with the Shapiro Award and in 2010 the North County Business of the year.
He is survived by his wife Jean, his 4 children, Mary (Mike) Shanahan, Nancy Tomlinson, Joann (John) Bellinger and Robert Sturtz II. He leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, a brother Virgil (Sue) Sturtze, a sister Barbara (Jack) Nortz, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents and daughter Sue Remley.
Arrangements are through Cleveland Funeral Home. Calling hours are February 14, 11-2pm at 404 Sherman St., Watertown. The funeral will be held at 3:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, reception to follow in the assembly hall.
