Mary Docteur Obituary

Mary Catherine Docteur passed away on October 17, 2023 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown in the company of her family. She was born on July 17, 1944 in Tyler, Texas, the eldest child of LeRoy and Catherine (Funke) Hoyt.

Mary grew up in Astoria, Queens, NY until she was 16 years old when the family moved to North Syracuse. She graduated from LeMoyne College in 1966 and began her career as a teacher. She started at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Baldwinsville for a year and then in the Ravena School District in the Albany area. After taking time to raise her children, she taught elementary school in the South Jefferson School District for 19 years. In retirement, Mary enjoyed volunteering at the Cape Vincent library and Chamber of Commerce. She also served as a patient advocate at the Samaritan Medical Center. She was an active member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Adams for 20 years and later was a Lay Minister and director of religious education at St. Vincent of Paul Church in Cape Vincent.

On April 26, 2002 she married David Docteur and they celebrated their 21st Anniversary earlier this year. She is survived by her husband David, her son Edward E. Fenlon (Stephanie) of Lancaster, PA and her daughter Mary Beth Lewis (Jeffrey) of Dayton, OH; three grandchildren Ethan Fenlon, Kevin Lewis, and Melvin Lewis; brothers Charles Hoyt (Maureen) of Phoenix, AZ and Larry Hoyt of Syracuse and sister Sally McDonald (Bill) of Atlanta, GA; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by step-children Aimee M. Biedekapp, Theodore A. Docteur, Gloria A. Docteur-Pratt, Thomas L. Docteur, James D. Docteur (Nadra), and Susan E. Christiana (David) as well as 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, a brother Thomas C. Hoyt, nephew David L. Hoyt, and a step-son Joseph M. Docteur.

Services will be on Saturday, Oct. 21 at St. Vincent of Paul Church with calling hours from 10-11 am with funeral mass and graveside service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cape Vincent Ambulance Squad or to Catholic Charities.
