Elizabeth Tesoro Smith, beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and loyal friend, passed away on May 31st. She leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Born on January 25, 1948, in Manila, Philippines, Elizabeth was the daughter of Ricardo and Emerenciana Plana. Her father, a Philippine Scout and U.S. soldier, was an enlisted aide to U.S. General Wainwright in World War II. Ricardo’s career brought the family to the United States and took them on adventures across the country and even to Germany.
Elizabeth’s childhood was defined by resilience, adaptability, and joy. She moved often, embracing the diverse experiences of her family’s military life. She cherished her bicycle, which she lovingly preserved and passed on to her children, a symbol of the timeless values she nurtured in her family. A 1966 graduate of Widefield High School in Security, Colorado, Elizabeth’s youthful years hinted at her deep faith and service-oriented nature, at one time considering a spiritual path as a nun.
Instead, Elizabeth’s journey led her to northern New York, where she dedicated her life to raising a family of ten children. Her love knew no bounds, and she instilled in her children the values of humility, perseverance, and the importance of education. Her quiet strength and steadfast support, combined with a unique gift for playful learning, laid a foundation of family and faith that enabled each of her children to pursue higher education and achieve their dreams.
Elizabeth is survived by her devoted husband, Ken Smith, and her 10, loving children: Lisa (Walter), Christopher Hirschey (Yani), Ryan Hirschey (Kerri), Deanna (Michael), Robert Hirschey, Nicole, Maribeth (James), Roy Hirschey (Sara), Julie (Benjamin), and Jaclyn (Philip). She also leaves behind her stepdaughters Allison Stersic (Charlie) and Erin DeRaimo (Joe), and 18 treasured grandchildren that brought her endless joy and pride: Manny Reyes, Tia Malai, Thomas Hirschey, Laryssa, Scarlett, Graeme, Christian Hirschey, Annalise, Collin DeRaimo, Brady Hirschey, Wolf, Lily Hirschey, Leo, Alden, Colton, Mariella, George, and Malaya.
Cherishing the memories of their dear sister are 6 siblings: Cynthia Plana, Linda Hirschey (Martin), Roy Plana (Christine), Therese Pempek (Mark), Anthony Plana (Brenda), and Jeannette Plana.
Elizabeth’s dedication extended beyond her family. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 20 years, earning a reputation for her diligence and kindness. Following her retirement, she found fulfillment in her role at the Agape Shoppe in downtown
Watertown, where she eventually became the manager. The store, aligned with the mission of the Mennonite Central Committee and Ten Thousand Villages, reflected Elizabeth’s passion for supporting fair trade and global artisans. She also enjoyed gardening and flower arrangements, teaching adult literacy at the local public library, and as a pianist, instilled the love of musical performance in her children.
Calling hours will be from 12 pm to 2 pm on Thursday, June 5th, at the Cleveland Funeral Home, 404 Sherman Street, Watertown, NY. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee at MCC.org.
Elizabeth’s memory will forever be cherished by all who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, quiet strength, and generosity of spirit. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence and a family that will honor her legacy for generations to come.
She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Inc., Watertown.
