Delano Merrill Heath, 78, of Cape Vincent, New York, passed away peacefully at home
on April 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home.
Born on May 10, 1947, in Cambridge, Vermont, Delano was the beloved son of Merrill
and Marjorie Heath. He grew up in a close-knit Vermont community and graduated from
Hyde Park Academy in 1965. Before and after graduation, he dedicated many years to
the family lumber business, where his strong work ethic and craftsmanship earned him
the respect of colleagues and neighbors alike.
In his forties, Delano followed a new calling and earned his license to practice drug and
alcohol counseling. Over the years, he worked at Maple Leaf Farm, the state prison
system, and in private counseling—touching countless lives with his compassion,
honesty, and unshakable belief in people's ability to change.
Delano was a man of many strengths and opinions—some useful, some simply
colorful—but all genuine. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always
happiest when surrounded by family. In his spare time, he could be found in his
workshop, building or mending something from wood with remarkable care. He also
loved tending his gardens and flower beds, proudly watching the fruits of his labor
flourish each season.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy Heath; his children, Melissa Goetz (and
husband Albert Goetz III) and their children Anna and Albert IV. Matthew Heath,
whose children include Brittney and Breanna and her children Sophia Gillan,
and Parker Gillan. Steven and Mandy Droney whose children include Liam and
Logan Droney and her children Kyler and Sylas Raymond.
Delano was predeceased by his Brother Curtis Heath and grandson Branden
Wescom, and by his great-grandson Hunter Washburn. His steady spirit, wry humor,
and love of family will live on in the stories and memories of all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Vincent of Paul Church in Cape Vincent, Saturday April 11th at 11 am.
