Charles Van Schaick Obituary

Charles R. Van Schaick passed away May 30 unexpectedly at his home in Cape Vincent that he built and resided in since 1964.

Born February 21, 1935 to Ralph and Helen (Saunders) Van Schaick in Cape Vincent, New York. He graduated from the Cape Vincent Central School in 1953. He then furthered his education at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario Canada. Charles went on to receive his Master's Degree at Syracuse University. He was the first of his family to attend college and receive a degree. Charles married Margaret Ann Smith on August 29, 1959 at St. Vincent of Paul Church in Cape Vincent, New York. Charles briefly worked at Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo, New York while Ann attended nursing school.

Charles was a Science teacher and taught both General Science as well as Biology. He started his career teaching at Lyme Central School and also briefly served as Vice-Principal. He then went on to teach at General Brown Central School District retiring in June 1991.

Charles was an avid gardener who enjoyed being outdoors tending his flower beds and vegetable gardens. Charles enjoyed reading and following Syracuse University sports teams as well as the New York Yankees, Giants, Rangers and Knicks. He looked forward to spending time with his six grandchildren and attending their activities. Charles served on the Board for the Riverside Cemetery in Cape Vincent. He was an ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church.

Charles was predeceased by his parents, mother-in-law Eleanor Bourcy, brother-in-law D. James Smith and a sister-in-law Barbara Van Schaick.

Charles is survived by his wife Ann Van Schaick of over sixty-four years of marriage. He is also survived by his two sons and their families: Bruce (Melanie) their children Aidan, Siara, and Nicholas of Jamesville, NY and Mark (Julia) their children Duncan, Victoria "Tory", and Drake of Clayton, NY. As well as a brother Richard of Elkton, Maryland and a number of cousins.

As per his request a private graveside burial with prayers will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 11 AM at Riverside Cemetery of Cape Vincent, NY. The family wishes to thank the Cape Vincent Rescue Squad and the New York State Troopers for their assistance. Donations in his name can be sent to the Rescue Squad of Cape Vincent or SPCA of Watertown.
