Barbara Sargent Obituary

On March 1, 2024, Barbara Hinsdale Sargent, formerly of Watertown, NY, departed this earth far better than she found it over 93 and half years ago.

Her energy, determination and zest for life were expressed and shared in so many positive ways throughout her lifetime. She was a loving and devoted wife for over 64 years to Clealand Austin Sargent, Jr., who predeceased her nine years ago, and a kind, caring, and loving mother to Scott Alan Sargent and Candice Elizabeth Harris and a treasured friend to many.

Her loving smile and bubbly personality made her a friend to many and all that came to know her knew immediately how much she cared.

Her love, graciousness and kindness were transferred and will live on forever in her two children (Scott and wife Kim and Candice), seven grandchildren (Sheena Sargent, Breanne Scanlon and husband Chris, Kyle Patchen and wife Meghan, Timothy Patchen, Austin Sargent and wife Amanda, Joshua Patchen and Amanda Sargent), eight great-grandchildren (Dominique Mero, Davina Patchen, Ryan Patchen, Xavier Scanlon, Analia Patchen, Kamron Patchen, Gage Patchen, and Kenzie Scanlon), one great great-grandchild (Kahleia Reese), plus all her many friends. Her interests and talents were always reflected in what she did and much of her hand painted ceramic artwork is proudly displayed in many family members’ homes.

Shortly after her marriage to Clealand on February 17, 1951, they moved to Orwell, Vermont and took over the operation of the family farm – 150-acre apple orchard. She worked as an administrative secretary for the President of Middlebury College up until she and Clealand adopted Scott in January 1963. In August 1966, she and her family moved to Syracuse, N.Y. where she began teaching ceramic classes. Her family expanded in June 1968 when they adopted Candice. In October 1970, she and her family moved to Watertown, N.Y. where she and her husband, Clealand, started their own business – Sargent Ceramics. In 1985, she obtained her real estate license and began selling homes throughout the North Country. After her retirement from real estate, the passing of her husband in 2015 and her desire to live closer to family, she sold her long-time home in Watertown and moved to Flanders, N.J. to live with her son Scott, his wife Kim and two daughters Sheena and Amanda. She cherished and treasured her family, and her legacy of family love will always be remembered and honored.

She was a member and sang in the choir at Asbury United Methodist Church for over 45 years and served as the Treasurer for 20 years. She cherished her church family and extended her generosity in so many ways.

Calling hours will be at Asbury church from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, with a memorial/celebration of life service to follow at 1:30 p.m. A time of fellowship and refreshment
will immediately follow the memorial/celebration of life service in Asbury’s Wesley Hall.
